INTRO

If you're reading this, that means you either want to learn to knit, or you already knit but would like to do it with a group of like minded crafties. Either way, welcome! For the knew knitters or new project starters, the information below will help set you on your way.

MATERIALS

For new knitters, I recommend a simple starter project like a scarf. They're easy to make, easy to see and correct beginner mistakes, and make great gifts! You will need:

YARN (For your first project I suggest a scarf using a yarn in the chunky variety. 2 balls of chunky weight yarn should do it!)

KNITTING NEEDLES (your yarn label will provide a suggested needle size. For chunky, it's generally size 11, 13, or 15)

STITCH MARKERS (You won't need these for a scarf, but you will need them for a hat.)

To purchase your materials, you have three options.

Yarn store

There are several yarn shops in the city, but two of my favorites are:

  1. Knitty City – 208 West 79th St, New York, NY 10024
They have a gorgeous selection of yarn, tons of pattern books, and a helpful and knowledgeable staff. They also have needles, hooks, and any other accessories you'll need.

  2. Purl SoHo – 459 Broome Street, New York, New York 10013
They have a less diverse selection of yarn colors and weights, but they do have a knowledgeable and friendly staff as well as knitting accessories.

Either Purl SoHo or Knitty City can be your one stop shop to help you get your first project started.

Online

A great website for all everything you'll need is KnitPicks.com. You can get everything you need at this site, but I recommend you purchase your materials in person so you can ask for guidance if you need it and also so that you can sample the texture of your yarn.

Project Kits

Another great way to get started is to purchase a project kit. These will provide everything you need to get started.
